Were you scared, ashamed, unprepared for all the negative unsolicited comments and suggestions by worried friends and family members? Some of them were ready to play 'Dr. Njenga' on you, asking you if there was anything going on in your life that was causing you to 'neglect' yourself and outward appearance. Others called together a family meeting, thinking you had joined some cult where you vowed to abstain from combing or washing your hair. ''Are you into art now?'' ''Is this a 'fashion' that's going on? Worried, they tried all means to convince you to 'make' your hair. Funds were raised, bribes were offered, threats were made, all to have you succumb and give up this 'natural hair trend' that you had started following. We are all struggling with something within ourselves. I know everyone's on their own natural hair/health journey, but I feel saddened when some of us, after doing their research and gathering all the helpful information decide to return to using chemicals that have been linked to very many diseases, especially among us African/African American women. ''Her hands and my hair don't get along! My scalp was so itchy, it felt like my head was on fire. I'm never letting her braid my hair again!'' Those are some harsh words that we often hear among ourselves when discussing a salon experience or listening to a friend reviewing a braider . But have you ever wondered why it pains so much when one braider does your hair, while another is so tender, you even forget she's sculpting your hair away and you even end up falling asleep? There are many superstitious stories and reasonings around this issue, but let's try to analyse the problem first. |
